Seaton, A., Lapp, N. L., and Morgan, W. K. C. (1972). Brit. J. industr. Med., 29, 50-55. Relationship of pulmonary impairment in simple coal workers' pneumoconiosis to type of radiographic opacity. From a group of 1 461 working coal miners who participated in an epidemiological study, 223 men with simple pneumoconiosis were selected on the basis of the type of small rounded opacity noted to be present in their chest films. No differences in spirometry or lung volumes were found between those with the micronodular (q) and those with pinhead (p) opacities. Twenty-five non-smoking miners with category 2 or 3 simple coal workers'pneumoconiosiswere subsequently selected for further pulmonary function testing. Studies of lung volumes and pulmonary mechanics showed no difference between those with the pinhead and micronodular types of opacity; however, transfer factor was somewhat lower in those with the former.

Pulmonary disability in coal workers' pneumoconiosis.
Results from a correlation survey which compared radiological and physiological findings during life with detailed morbid anatomical findings in the lungs of 247 deceased miners and ex-miners with pneumoconiosis were used to assess the extent and significance of their pulmonary disability.Coal workers' pneumoconiosis usually caused progressive impairment of ventilation, which in the simple type...
متن کاملComparison of high-resolution computerized tomography with film-screen radiography for the evaluation of opacity and the recognition of coal workers' pneumoconiosis.
OBJECTIVES Current diagnostic standards of pneumoconiosis, which is the most serious occupational disease in China, are based on film-screen radiography (FSR). However, parenchymal structure overlap limits the sensitivity of FSR in the clinic. High-resolution computerized tomography (HRCT) has the advantage of identifying nodular pulmonary parenchymal changes. In this study, we aimed to compare...
متن کاملComparison of radiographic appearances with associated pathology and lung dust content in a group of coalworkers.
The pathology and dust content of lungs from 261 coalminers in relation to the appearances of their chest radiographs taken within four years of death were examined. Radiological opacities of coalworkers' pneumoconiosis were more profuse the more dust was retained in lungs. Among the men who had mined low rank coal--that is, with a relatively high proportion of ash--the increase in profusion wa...
متن کاملDescriptive Characteristics of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis Cases in Turkey
Working condition in underground mining are associated with many important risk factors for workers' health such as work injuries and occupational diseases. Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is a preventable lung disease caused by occupational exposure to coal mine dust and was observed highly common in coal miners. Respira-ble coal dust concentration in working area, duration of exposure and ...
متن کاملSilicosis and coal workers' pneumoconiosis.
Exposure to coal mine dust and/or crystalline silica results in pneumoconiosis with initiation and progression of pulmonary fibrosis. This review presents characteristics of simple and complicated coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) as well as pathologic indices of acute and chronic silicosis by summarizing results of in vitro, animal, and human investigations. These results support four basic m...
